    if everything fell quiet

    "Be my guide
    Be my pilot
Be the breath on my face
Be the arms aching for me
Be the heart in my chest
    Be my hope
    I'll be your hope
Be the hair that knots with my hair
Be the drink when I am thirsty
Be the hand I'll hold at night"

    If Everything Fell Quiet
    - Reindeer Section

There is something about the fog.
It creates a mood, an ambience and a quiet. Everything seems to be still, as if holding its breath, waiting for the perfect moment to exhale. But for me, I never want the exhale, but instead the quiet and the still to continue.

I love to people watch, the being able to do this on a foggy day creates a kind of magic a kind of anticipation that could not be there without it. Couples are the most intriguing of all for me...the body language becomes a little more intimate, the conversation hushed and I feel I have to lean in closer and listen harder and look longer to get past that shimmery wall that surrounds them, keeping them at a distance.

It's magical how they seem disappear behind city buildings as if turning into ghosts that just gradually fade. How their gestures to each other appear to be in slow motion, graceful and reminiscent of a ballet. Their secret glances and stolen kisses become scenes from those old black and white movies, a touch of film noir mixed with a playful Doris Day and Rock Hudson movie.

The best of all though when it comes to watching couples in the fog, is when they walk along the waters edge, creating silhouettes against that wall of grey. Every now and then a little light gets in and you are let into that magic moment, but just for a split second, and then its back to being an observer, once again everything falls quiet...

I - too - love the silence..the peace and romantic vision that fog brings with it in the early morning. Here - the fog often dissipates with the light of day..and it is rare that I can capture people fading in and out of its beauty. Your words and image work perfectly together!!! Lovely post!!!

The fog does seem so mysterious and one just doesn't want to speak too loudly and break the spell.

Ah...you are a romantic! The ancients, who didn't understand what caused the formation of fog, must have thought it very mysterious and perhaps frightening. Probably very few found it romantic. But I agree with you that it can create romantic conditions if you're not driving down the interstate at 65 miles an hour. Farmergal

I adore the fog so reading this drew me in the same way fog draws me in. I love how you feel about the fog and people watching. This post makes me want to come back for more. Perfect.

I'm not sure which I enjoyed more -- the absolutely wonderful image or the well written description of your thoughts about fog. Magical post.

A wonderful post, Sharon, in both image and words. Maybe it takes a pathway along the waters edge to get people out walking in the fog, I never see that here. Well, maybe people out walking, but not hand in hand, but rather hurrying to get where they are going. Well done!

I started smiling, Sharon, when I opened this up and saw the image...and then read your words. Holland is so full of fog, which I love, and gives me my fill. But to capture the romance...ahhhh, that is magical. You have done it perfectly!

That's a beautiful photo! So evocative. We don't really have fog in AZ very often, I think it's been a few years since I last saw it, but I do love to see photos of it.

Sharon, this is a lovely post. I smiled while I was reading it because we've been exposed to so much of Vancouver's fog this past few weeks. My husband, who lived there for many years, still misses it.
